Join the winner of PDN’s Great Outdoors and Epson International’s Pano Competitions, Hank Gans, and B&W Magazine Excellence Award winner Michael Stimola, for a magical five day photographic exploration of Midcoast Maine.

Workshop attendees will stay at the East Wind Inn, which sits on the rocky shore of Tenants Harbor on Maine’s Saint George Peninsula. All of the rooms we have reserved for attendees at the Inn have wonderful views of the beautiful working fishing and lobstering harbor. Stunning scenery and dramatic seascapes are just outside your door.

Great photo opportunities abound as we photograph lobster boats heading out to drop their traps in Penobscot Bay, ascend to the lamp room atop Owls Head lighthouse and photograph the Milky Way rising behind nearby Marshall’s Point light. We will be just a few minutes away from Port Clyde, another of Maine’s most photogenic working harbors, and a short drive to the incredible natural rock formations of Pemaquid Point.

During this workshop, the East Wind Inn will be the hub from which we venture out in all directions to explore with our cameras. Our initial photographic exploration will be of Tenant’s Harbor, itself, the morning after our arrival. Breakfast, included with the cost of your room, will follow in the Inn’s Wan-E-Set restaurant, or, if weather permits, on the Inn’s veranda overlooking the harbor. After some leisure time, each morning at 10:30, we have a class in the East Wind Inn’s Quarry Tavern where Hank and Michael will review your photographs and help you edit and process your images using Photoshop CC2018 and related plugins. Guidance can be given on all aspects of your creative workflow from shooting though the finished photograph.

During this workshop we’ll photograph Port Clyde’s lobster boats heading out at sunrise and returning from the sea at sunset. We’ll travel on the mail boat from Port Clyde to legendary Monhegan Island for an always memorable and very photographable day trip.

The workshop attendees explore the St. George, Cushing and Pemaquid Peninsulas where Andrew Wyeth lived and painted and where his son, Jamie, continues to create his incredible images. Jamie’s boat, the Dreadnaught, is docked next to the East Wind Inn, waiting to transport him to his studio on Southern Island at the mouth of Tenant’s Harbor. Jamie Wyeth sightings have happened during past Maine workshops; indeed, one workshop attendee was surprised and delighted when Jamie walked up and introduced himself to her at the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland.

This is Wyeth country and for good reason; the people, landscapes and seascapes of the area are so striking. We’ll photograph at Harjula Farm and also at the Olson House, both frequent subjects of Andrew Wyeth. The workshop has applied for a permit to have Christina Olson’s house, where Wyeth’s “Christina’s World” was painted, all to ourselves to enable us to photograph there without restrictions.

After photographing the dramatic shoreline and lighthouse at Pemaquid Point we will enjoy and photograph the charm of nearby New Harbor from the elevated deck of Shaw’s Wharf where we will dine on fresh Maine lobsters right off the boats of the lobstermen who moor their boats there.

We’ll take an easy walk on the breakwater jetty in Rockland Harbor to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse situated in the center of the harbor, a perfect vantage point to photograph the Maine schooners passing between us and nearby Owl’s Head.

We will also visit Owl’s Head, itself, where we will be allowed to climb the lighthouse tower (an easy few step climb) up into to the lamp house where we will have a majestic view of Penobscot Bay and a great chance to see and photograph the lighthouse’s lit and functioning light, one of the last six fresnel lenses still in operation in Maine.

We’ll ascend 412 feet by elevator to the observation tower of the new Penobscot Bay Narrows Bridge which offers an amazing view of the Maine countryside, towns and the Penobscot River. Afterwards we’ll explore historic Fort Knox located next to the bridge.

We will photograph the Union Fair, one of twenty-four agricultural fairs in the state of Maine. a true agricultural fair. There is always the highly photogenic midway and carnival rides, but we really focus on the agricultural aspect: the horse pulling, the cattle shows, the sheep, and pigs, and oxen  being displayed there, along with the famed Maine Blueberry Festival held at the fair.

At the conclusion of the workshop, those driving home via Route 95 on Saturday, August 25th, can join the workshop instructors for an additional afternoon of photographic discovery at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village.

The pace of this workshop will enable you to remain at each site, discover the shot and be there when the light is right. This is a photographer’s tour and we will explore each situation thoroughly. Time will be given to the photographers to truly see and then visually interpret what is around them. Assistance by the workshop instructors will be available during these times at all locations.

The 2018 Midcoast Maine Photographic Workshop attendees will see and record amazing and beautiful moments along the Maine coast. Join us!
