The Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, offers an irresistible mix of breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife, along with a rich and vibrant culture. The islands are famous for their vast stretches of paradise beaches with white sand and turquoise water, but also for their ancient history and monuments. Dramatic coastal scenes, abandoned crofts, standing stones, lochs, mountain landscapes and much more compete for the photographer’s attention and provide a varied and rich set of subjects for your portfolio.

What you can expect
This 6 day (5 night) photography tour has a focus on long exposure techniques. Led by Dave Hunt, the tour starts and finishes in Edinburgh as the the beautiful drives up to Ullapool and back, and also the ferry sailings to and from Stornoway, are parts of the experience you wouldn’t want to miss.

To make best use of the daylight, we leave Edinburgh early in the morning on day 1 to make our way up North.

Here are some of the highlights of this photography tour:

The famous Callanish Stones, of course
Butt of Lewis, the most northern point with the famous lighthouse
Gearrannan blackhouse village and Carloway Broch
The beaches of Luskentyre, Seilebost and Scarista
The South Lochs area in Lewis teaming with wildlife from otters to osprey, whales and sharks
Rodel and its 15th century St Clement’s Church
Trip over the Sound of Harris to the Uist isles.

Tutor

The tutor Dave Hunt describes himself as “just a guy following his passion, inspired by the places he visits and the people he meets”. Fine art photographer describes his style of working rather than the subject or specific market he works in. His passion is to get participants to create images that ask a question, tell a story or at least inspire an emotion or reaction in the viewer.

The course is suitable for all levels of ability and experience. A discount is available for non-photographer accompanying guests.

Accommodation
The Harris Hotel in Tarbert has been family owned and run for over 100 years.  Built in 1865 by the 7th Earl of Dunmore, it was originally called the Tarbert Hotel. At the time, he owned the North Harris Estate and built the hotel as a “sporting retreat” for anglers. After the estate changed hands several times, William Cameron took over the lease of the hotel in 1903 and changed the name to the Harris Hotel. The Cameron family bought the hotel outright in 1948, and the third and fourth generations are now running the business.

Photography…the mindful way
One prime ethos of the workshops run by our tutor Dave Hunt is to slow down the capture process and give more value to the creative side of your photography. Connecting with not only the Scottish landscapes, but also our own thoughts and feelings leads to a deeper appreciation of our own photography. A digital SLR or similar and a tripod with remote or cable release are desirable. Ideally the camera should allow control of the focus, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, take light reading, allow to change senses and add filters to the lens (you don’t have to know how to do all of these things yet).
