The Olympic National Forest, coastal, and mountain ecosystems combine to create a spectacular wilderness park. With its incredible range of precipitation and elevation, diversity is the hallmark of Olympic National Park. Encompassing nearly a million acres, the park protects a vast wilderness, thousands of years of human history, and several distinctly different ecosystems, including glacier-capped mountains, old-growth temperate rain forests, and over 70 miles of wild coastline. – National Park Service

Come photograph the varied landscape of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula from the lush rain forests to high mountain ridges to ocean beaches. Early October is usually gorgeous in this part of the park. The rains tend to start at the end of the month. Many years have plenty of sunny days and clear nights during the first two to three weeks of October.

Some of the places we will photograph include waterfalls, the Hoh Rain Forest (the quietest place in the US), the amazing Ruby and Rialto Beach, the magnificent views from Hurricane Ridge. We will also visit the Sol Doc Rain Forest, the Lower Elwha River and maybe the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge that is on the edge of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The dominant tree species here are evergreens There are big leaf maples are draped with thick coats of emerald green moss. They are strikingly beautiful even without their leaves, but in early to mid-October, their leaves are still abundant and a mix of green and pale yellow. The understory trees provide patches of blazing red colors. Also, the Elk may be visible in the Hoh Rain Forest.

WORKSHOP GOALS: We will strive to help you improve your technique and your photographic vision by studying color, composition, and light. We will also discuss Black & White digital techniques and panoramas. Our workshop will be organized for all to leave Washington with great pictures and with a new-found knowledge. It will be a memorable and fun experience for all. Open to photographers with all levels of experience.

Your instructor, Keith Skelton, has over 35 years of experience as an educator and as a professional photographer. Keith is a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography.
