After last week’s high-key assignment, we thought we would switch gears and ask you to consider creating low-key images.
What is low-key photography? Low-key photography is a genre of photography where natural or artificial light is emphasized only in specific areas in the frame. The remaining part of the frame is dark.
Low-key photography tips:
Low-key photography requires a dark background. Here are a few tips to help achieve this:
Firstly, use a black backdrop; this is the easiest way to achieve a consistent dark background.
Second, keep your subject forward; the less light that hits the background, the darker it will be. If you are using an isolated source of light you want to make sure that it is hitting only your subject and not the backdrop..
Third, keep your ISO as low as possible; this will keep down noise. You may need to use some exposure composition to keep your overall scene dark.
