Appalachian Mountain Magic 2026 – 8 photo shoots

Join BCPA’s photography workshop in the beautiful mountains of western Virginia where springtime is stunning. The rivers tend to be full, and the waterfalls are rushing with a force not usually seen at other times of year. The first blush of spring is on the trees and shrubs, and wildflowers, some quite rare, surprise you almost everywhere. In addition, there will be many other subjects to inspire you — old mills, villages, farms, country churches, log buildings, great barns, woodland roads and mountain mists that abound in this historic area. You can’t go wrong photographically.

We’ll be based in Warm Springs in historic Bath County, located high in the beautiful Alleghany Mountains of Appalachia. Not much has changed in this county since 1861 when General Robert E. Lee said of the area, “The views are so magnificent … the valleys so beautiful, the scenery so peaceful.” You’ll agree that this is a wonderful place to photograph. In fact, this area has attracted interest from National Geographic, The Travel Channel, and others.

The recently refurbished — really rebuilt — bath houses harken back to the second half of the 18th century when visitors seeking the therapeutic properties of the springs spurred the building of two bath houses, one for the gentlemen and one for the ladies. In 1818 and beyond, luminaries such as Presidents Jefferson, Tyler, and even FDR came to immerse in the mineral-rich, thermal springs. You’ll have a chance to experience the baths yourself and read all about their history. Archeological findings show that humans have visited this site for over 9,000 years!

And with the trees not fully leafed out, we will be able to see some of the stunning vistas with all their layers! We look forward to spending the better part of a week with you exploring many of these treasures.

BCPA always recommends that you stay an extra few days after the workshop, not only to practice your new-found or recently-honed photographic skills and eye, but to return to areas that intrigued you or to explore new ones. (Click here for the instructors’ galleries.)

Here, you’ll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs. With only 8 participants, you will get plenty of attention. Unless you are in bed or on the loo, Margo is with you, not to tell you what to photograph, rather to help you seek your own vision in a more compelling way. And let’s not forget the amazing daily critiques that many feel is the most important part of BCPA’s workshops. Everyone participants, and pros even learn from and get inspired by the work of beginners.

When making your plans, it is critical that you plan on arriving for our first session on Monday. Our newcomers should be ready to go at noon, while our seasoned alumni can wait until 1:00.

Deposit & Cancellation Policy

Our fees qualify for discounts in some cases.  Deposits are due with the application (generally 1/4 fee), with subsequent installments four months (1/2 fee) and two months (1/4 fee) out. Exceptions are noted on individual workshop pages. Check out our Terms and Conditions page. And this is a great location to bring a non-photographing guest with you. They need to pay for their own expenses, of course, but there is no fee for them to join us. We have many "spousal units" alumni who have joined us multiple times over the years.

Equipment Recommended:

You will need your camera, an assortment of lenses, including your foot zoom, but that said, Margo's late mentor, Ernst Haas, always preached to carry less and see more. You will need a working knowledge of the basics of your camera (please "play" with your camera before coming — a workshop is NOT the time to bring a new piece of equipment that will take your concentration away from your seeing and composing), your camera manual, a proper tripod and ball head - see our  Tripods & Ball Heads blog, a rested brain, and a willingness to have fun, take chances, "make mistakes" that may turn out to be happy successes, and laugh a lot!

Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures

Margo Taussig Pinkerton and her late husband, Arnold “Arnie” Zann, were a team of working fine-art photographers whose images have been widely published in most major domestic and international magazines. They were also privileged to work for top Fortune 500 corporations. After 9/11, Margo and Arnie retired from editorial and commercial work and put thier efforts into the workshops that Margo started back in the earlyh\ 80s, ones that Arnie and she brought to their current level, and that Margo continues to run. Her passion for photography is infectious, and she loves sharing a lifetime of professional experiences with her participants.
