Autumn on the Outer Banks 2026 – 8 photo shoots

The Outer Banks are part of our own back yard that we know so well, and we will go to great locations where you can celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs.

Who knows, you might join the increasing number of photographers who have won awards with images they have created in our workshops out here!

We’ll be based in Nags Head, near all our locations, making it easier to get up for those early-morning shoots! Every day, the landscapes and seascapes take on a different look, depending upon the weather and time of day.

Click here for the instructors’ galleries.
There is so much more than just lighthouses to photograph, but for those who love these beacons of light, each lighthouse, with its unique shape and pattern, has a particular flash sequence, so even at night or early in the morning, you’ll know which one you are seeing and photographing. As someone who grew up sailing, I can tell you how important that is!

Surrounding the lighthouses are the salt marshes with their many varieties of reeds and grasses, small skiffs dotting the estuaries, changing reflections, sand fences trying to save the dunes, wildlife, and gorgeous sunrises and sunsets.

Even in inclement weather, particularly in inclement weather, our locations are dramatic against a stormy sky. Take a look at our blog “Blue Skies, Who Needs’em” and you will see what we mean.

The National Seashore has many other interesting subjects — the patterns of the sand dunes, sea oats and beach peas, and surf pounding the deserted beaches.

When making your plans, it is critical that you plan on arriving for our first session. We will be going over our Principles of Photography, also a good review for our alumni. We hope that our guests will join us and meet the others.

Here, you’ll be able to celebrate your passion for photography, hone your seeing and imaging skills, and learn about the magic of light to make wonderful photographs. With only 8 participants, you will get plenty of attention. Unless you are in bed or on the loo, Margo is with you, not to tell you what to photograph, rather to help you seek your own vision in a more compelling way. And let’s not forget the amazing daily critiques that many feel is the most important part of BCPA’s workshops. Everyone participants, and pros even learn from and get inspired by the work of beginners.

Deposit & Cancellation Policy

Our fees qualify for discounts in some cases.  Deposits are due with the application (generally 1/4 fee), with subsequent installments four months (1/2 fee) and two months (1/4 fee) out. Exceptions are noted on individual workshop pages. Check out our Terms and Conditions page. And this is a great location to bring a non-photographing guest with you. They need to pay for their own expenses, of course, but there is no fee for them to join us. We have many "spousal units" alumni who have joined us multiple times over the years.

Equipment Recommended:

You will need your camera, an assortment of lenses, including your foot zoom, but that said, Margo's late mentor, Ernst Haas, always preached to carry less and see more. You will need a working knowledge of the basics of your camera (please "play" with your camera before coming — a workshop is NOT the time to bring a new piece of equipment that will take your concentration away from your seeing and composing), your camera manual, a proper tripod and ball head - see our  Tripods & Ball Heads blog, a rested brain, and a willingness to have fun, take chances, "make mistakes" that may turn out to be happy successes, and laugh a lot! Don’t forget, you will also need to bring your laptop with a good imaging program on it for our critique session that many alumni think is the best part of the workshop experience. We use Lightroom, but that does not mean that you need to have it.

Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures

Margo Taussig Pinkerton and her late husband, Arnold “Arnie” Zann, were a team of working fine-art photographers whose images have been widely published in most major domestic and international magazines. They were also privileged to work for top Fortune 500 corporations. After 9/11, Margo and Arnie retired from editorial and commercial work and put thier efforts into the workshops that Margo started back in the earlyh\ 80s, ones that Arnie and she brought to their current level, and that Margo continues to run. Her passion for photography is infectious, and she loves sharing a lifetime of professional experiences with her participants.
