Santa Fe — Chimayo Sunset Half-Day Workshops

$300 per person; minimum 2- participants: $425 for one person.

Welcome to Santa Fe and thanks for your interest in my photo workshop programs.
Give me a call the day before your workshop with any questions you may have. I will pick you up and drop you back after the workshop if you will be staying in Santa Fe, if not we arrange a meeting place for pickups. Note the only prerequisite is that you will have to be able to duck under a 4ft. fence. If that is a problem in any way, please give me a call. 505-328-5061, there is always plan B.
I will pick you up at 4 pm, then we head down the road towards Chimayo. Are you bringing a digital camera or a Smartphone? Or both? Either way, it’s fine. Download the app Snapseed onto your smartphone. Snapseed is a photo editing app, which will be a small but important part of your workshop. Tripods work well for sunsets if you have one bring it along, if not there are always workarounds. Bring hiking shoes/ sneakers will work, if need be, we are going to do a bit of lightweight hiking as we take an easy walk back into the picturesque Nambe Badlands to photograph.

We set out from Santa Fe stopping along the way to our destination of Chimayo making photographs of the sculpted landscapes, Sangre de Cristo mountains, Truchas Peaks, and the Jemez. (The history of Chimayo, New Mexico is a long and rich one. The area was first inhabited by the Tewa people, who called it Tsi Mayoh. The Spanish arrived in the 16th century and established a mission there, which was later destroyed in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. The Spanish returned in the 17th century and rebuilt the mission, which is now known as El Santuario de Chimayó.) Chimayo is an unforgettable location filled with unique local trappings and the Santuario de Chimayo is known for its healing powers and architectural beauty. We arrive in the picturesque village of Chimayo to photograph and explore the surroundings. We take a sit-down break in Chimayo while you learn photo-editing using the app Snapseed. On the way back to Santa Fe we re-visit the Nambe Badlands to make dramatically captivating sunset photographs. Photo-instructions throughout! Emphasis on composition, lens choice, landscape, architectural tips, the creative process, photo editing and, more. This is truly a great 1/2-day photo workshop. Digital cameras and smartphones are welcome.
During this workshop, you will experience the dramatic and enchanting beauty of Northern New Mexico while picking up photo insights and gaining a comprehensive understanding of the most important aspect of any art form. COMPOSITION!

I suggest taking my 2-hour workshop in Santa Fe as a precursor to the half-day Chimayo workshop; with emphasis on composition, including landscape and portrait photography, along with tips on low-light imaging and creative process. By first taking the photo-instructional tour/Santa Fe you will have learned compositional skills making your half-day Chimayo workshop more rewarding. If you decide to take this class contact me directly. (This class is not a prerequisite, although recommended for those interested in advancing their photographic/artistic skills.) Below view the links to both my teaching website and my personal fine art/commercial website. If you send me your email address, I will send you my photo-creative newsletters, and keep you posted with new updates, etc.

David’s more than 30 years of living in the Santa Fe area, along with his history as a professional photographer/photo-creative artist/educator will provide you insights into creating compelling imagery!

Equipment Recommended:

I am an expert in Digital Imaging as well as in all formats from 8x10/View Camera to the iPhone. Bring whatever camera equipment you are comfortable working with including your SmartPhone. This is also a good opportunity to get better acquainted with apps and iPhone accessories. The workshop goal is for participants to slow down and get involved in the creative process of composition. Tripods are a good tool for slowing  down and fine-tuning imagery to create tight and poignant compositions. I have written extensively about the creative process and how to better create a  photographic workflow that will help you understand and produce strong, harmonious and expressive compositions. I am happy to share/instruct however best I can!

ARTIST STATEMENT
My impetus for making art is to explore the mystery and magic of creative process as a tool and challenge to better understand who I am and my relationship to the world around me. My motivation is to translate and share my experiential relationship with the viewer through the language of light, form, and texture. My goal is to create visual metaphors much like a poet uses the written language. Beyond aesthetic considerations such as color, value, and composition what I strive to reveal through my artistic endeavors is the quintessential nature of the subject at hand.
