Join us for our  Grand Teton Photo Adventure

An ethereal mountain landscape where jagged peaks tower more than a mile above Jackson Hole Valley, Grand Teton National Park is located in northwestern Wyoming, just south of Yellowstone National Park, and just north of the town of Jackson Hole. These are mountains of the imagination. The mountains that led to the creation of Grand Teton National Park-where you can explore and photograph over 200 miles of trails, float the Snake River and enjoy the serenity of this special place. Sixty species of mammals, over 300 species of birds and a half-dozen game fish call the Jackson Hole area home. The park is open year round with a huge variety of things to see and photograph. Truly an unforgettable experience for all the senses!

Day (1) Jackson – Grand Teton
We meet at 11am in the lobby of our hotel, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles and techniques. After lunch we turn you loose upon the town of Jackson to explore for a couple of hours or to catch up on jet lag. We meet again in the afternoon for an evening tour of Grand Teton Park where we hope to find some wildlife and some dynamic, colorful skies. In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at our favorite Jackson restaurant.. (D)

Day (2) Antelope Flats – Oxbow Bend
Our first day is a very early one in order to reach our location, inside Teton National Park, before sunrise. The exact location this morning, as with most, will be determined by the weather, lighting and wildflower conditions. Antelope Flats will be a likely destination as it usually allows for both landscape and wildlife photo opportunities. After spending time exploring this area we’ll have breakfast either back in Jackson or at a nearby restaurant within the Park. As the mid-day light is not typically great for landscapes each day we’ll probably take a break back at the hotel and review some of your images captured so far. Lunch back in Jackson unless we find ourselves out in the Park later than planned. Since on Tuesday we will be doing some action shooting, the afternoon will include a discussion on the different possible camera settings to either freeze the shot or to intentionally blur your images, a technique called panning. In the late afternoon we’ll move out looking for landscape and wildlife opportunities for sunset. If weather allows and we have a clear sky we can try our hand at some long exposure evening shots. Wildlife is usually more active early and late in the day so we’ll be on the look-out. (B)

Day (3) Horse Round-up – Bridger Teton National Forest
We’ll be up early again on Tuesday so we can be in position for the daily horse round-up at the Heart 6 Guest Ranch. Things happen quickly and your instructor will point out the best locations to stand for when the horses come stampeding by. For those interested we’ll take off on an optional horseback trail ride into the Teton National Forest for a 4-5 hour outing. We’ll take it slow and our wrangler will accommodate us with stops as we see fit, or as our “backsides” see fit! The destination here is the ridge line overlooking the Buffalo Fork River. We’ll have views off in the distance of the Grand Tetons not visible without a horse ride or by a backpacking. How much time we spend here will be up to us within the trail ride time frame. It would be hard to find a better view from which to enjoy our pack lunch which will be provided. Late afternoon is a great time to spot wildlife so we’ll take advantage of this while out exploring some of the popular locations for these sightings. If conditions permit we’ll set-up for sunset landscape images before returning to Jackson for dinner. (B)

Day (4) Moulton Barns – Jackson Hole Rodeo*
We’ll start the day photographing in the Teton Valley before making our way to the ridge-line on the east side of the Park at one of our favorite locations. This spot is in the Bridger Teton National Forest. Access can be limited by road conditions. More will be known prior to your arrival. This area offers outstanding views of the entire range from a high viewpoint. We’ll always be on the look-out for wildlife photo opportunities and the Antelope Flats which we pass through is a good location for spotting bison, elk and antelope. We’ll stop to photograph the Moulton Barns which always make for excellent images, with or without the Tetons in the background. Antelope Flats typically has spectacular displays of wildflowers this time of year so we’ll probably revisit this area a time or two… or more. We return to our hotel for what we’re sure will be a much appreciated and deserved rest, especially if you joined the trail ride. Dinner will be in Jackson. We’ll have a quick refresher on what to expect during the evening rodeo* which is next on our list. (B)
*Summer months only… In the evening we depart to shoot the Jackson Hole Rodeo where we will have access to the rodeo cowboys, preparing for their ride and in the shoots.

Day (5) Snake River Overlook – Jenny Lake Area
Thursday will be adjusted depending on what we’ve accomplished so far but to start with we’ll greet the sunrise at the Snake River Overlook. Moving into the Park we stop at Oxbow Bend watching for moose and perhaps grizzly bear that reside in the area. Have your long-lens ready! After breakfast we take a short hike to a spot your guide enjoys, a spot off the beaten path with wonderful views of the Cathedral Group and a spectacular ancient and lightning struck tree as a foreground. You’ll be sworn to secrecy! Returning to Jackson you’ll have time to wander the town and perhaps hang out at the Cowboy Bar. Later in the afternoon we depart for the Mill Iron Ranch for a western photo shoot and our “Farewell Dinner”. Here we will enjoy great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day (6) Jackson
On our last day we sleep in, no sunrise, casual breakfast in Jackson followed by a trip up the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Tram to take in the fantastic views from Rendezvous Peak. We then return to the hotel. Here we will have our final discussion, trade contact information, and bid you farewell. We urge you to extend your stay in Jackson, or elsewhere in Wyoming, and make good use of everything you will learn on our Photo Workshop Adventure. B)

May all who come as guests… leave as friends®
