Exploring glacier-fed waterfalls and alpine lakes in rugged Rocky Mountain National Park, and shoot the Milky Way high on Trail Ridge Road. June is one of the best times to shoot waterfalls in Colorado, when Spring rains combine with snow melt to maximize water flow. We will explore the Wild Basin, Glacier Gorge, Dream, Emerald & Gem Lakes, and other lovely locations inside and outside the park, high in the Rocky Mountains.

Colin will share his various techniques and strategies for taking beautiful photographs of waterfalls and flowing water.  Check out his blog post: How to Photograph Waterfalls Like a Pro.

NOTE:  This workshop will involve 3-5 miles of rugged hiking per day at 9,000-11,000′ elevations.  Participants MUST be in EXCELLENT PHYSICAL SHAPE.  If you are coming from sea level, plan to come at least a couple of days early to acclimatize yourself to the high elevations.

Field lessons will include tips and techniques for:

  • determining proper exposure
  • varying shutter speed for creative effect
  • capturing moving water in photographs
  • how to create the silky, long exposure waterfall effect
  • reading and shooting the light
  • photographing from different vantage points
  • working with a range of lenses for a range of compositions
  • using filters to improve artistic results
  • using your tripod to capture longer exposures and greater depth of field

Indoor instructional presentations will include:

  • Tips & techniques for photography waterfalls and moving water
  • Adobe Lightroom workflow for getting the most from your images
  • We will end the workshop with a group slide show and critique.

Group Size:   The workshop will be limited to 8 photographers

Deposit & Cancellation Policy

Cancellation policy:

Cancel more than 60 days in advance - full refund.

30-60 days, refund all but deposit, with a 50% credit offered toward future workshops.

Less than 30 days, refund only if your spot gets filled.

Equipment Recommended:

What to bring:

  • A digital or film camera capable of manual exposure settings.  Due to the short time frame of the workshop, people with digital cameras, especially digital SLR cameras, will get the most from the workshop.
  • A sturdy tripod is essential for capturing the long exposures necessary to capture waterfalls and streams.
  • Your favorite filters, but if you do not already own one, please pick up a circular polarizing filter for at least your favorite lens.  There will be a formal on-site demo on how to control reflections and glare on water using a circular polarizer.  A graduated neutral density filter can also be useful for sunrises.
  • A wide angle lens capable of shooting f/3.5 aperture or faster for capturing the Milky Way
  • Hiking boots: we will be hiking 3-5 miles a day, and a good set of waterproof hiking boots is good for protecting the ankles on rocky trails and slippery rocks, and allow you to get to better shooting positions in or near streams and below the falls.  Hiking sticks can also be useful.
  • A good backpack or shoulder bag for hiking with your gear, including tripod
  • Your own method of transportation.  We will carpool to  locations as possible.
