Learning Lightroom Classic 2026 | 3 half-day sessions

Lightroom keeps improving, and with each upgrade come new tools.

Many people want to get up to speed more quickly than they might be able to do on their own. Many are already familiar with Lightroom. Some have switched from other programs because of the ever-increasing sophistication of this program. Whatever your reason for using Lightroom, it always helps to get a leg up, to learn the ins and outs of the digital asset management — also known as “DAM” — aspects of this program, as well as to discover different ways to accomplish various imaging tasks.

Not only is Lightroom an incredibly intuitive imaging program once you get a jump start, it is also a robust DAM (Digital Asset Management) tool.

From organizational techniques that will allow you to quickly and efficiently create a sensible, organized folder structure that works for you, to being able to rename and move folders and files later (always from within Lightroom), to finding your favorite photographs, to using collections and keyword lists, to the various aspects of post-processing, we will bring you up to speed in Lightroom Classic and all its vast improvements.

The goal is to help you streamline your workflow so that you can spend more time photographing and less time at the computer. And, you will learn with hands-on experience processing your own images. After all, we are all individuals with different aesthetics.

PRACTICAL ITEMS

Our Lightroom Classic workshops are split into three intensive (but fun) three-and-a-half-hour sessions over a two-day period to allow you to absorb all the information presented. Each session’s fee is $290 before discounts, and there are exceptions to the prerequisites below, so some people may only need to attend Parts 2 and 3, but that will be determined after a phone interview.

Session 1, Friday morning from 8:30 to noon
We will cover the basics of Lightroom and its two principle modules, Library and Develop, an overview of the remaining modules, suggested Catalog and Preferences settings, organization, backing up, presets, importing your images through Lightroom, converting RAW files to the dng format to take advantage of quick loading in Lightroom, copyright templates, moving and renaming files and folders, collections, a suggested workflow with some dos and don’ts to keep you out of trouble, and other digital asset management tools available in Lightroom.

Session 2, Friday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:30
With the basics now under your belt, we will cover a suggested workflow with some dos and don’ts to keep you out of trouble, powerful tools available in the Develop module, including the multi-task capabilities of the adjustment brush, graduated filter, and radial filter tools. You will also learn about the Spot Removal tool (clone/heal), crop/angle, sharpen, lens correction, tone curve, straightening, and hue/saturation/luminance tools, among a host of others, both global and local. You will be working on your own images and your own style of photographing.

Session 3, Saturday morning from 8:30 to noon
In this session, we will address the more sophisticated tools in Lightroom such as the amazing new maskin g tools, Dehazing, painting with color, erasing in different tools, converting to black and white, enhancing faces in a natural manner, and we will do demos on a virtual copy (yes, we’ll tell you about that, too) of one image from each participant.

PREREQUISITES

Session 1 is for anyone who has not joined one of our Lightroom workshops before.

Session 2 is open to anyone who has completed our Session 1 and requires “homework” from you in the form of certain photographs on which you will work.

Session 3 is open to anyone who has already completed Sessions 1 and 2 in one of our Lightroom workshops. As with Session 2, it requires similar “homework” from you.

At the beginning of each session, you will receive a packet with both worksheets and a CD on Lightroom Classic that will help you move forward with this program and remind you of all the things you learned in this workshop.

Margo Taussig Pinkerton and her late husband, Arnold “Arnie” Zann, were a team of working fine-art photographers whose images have been widely published in most major domestic and international magazines. They were also privileged to work for top Fortune 500 corporations. After 9/11, Margo and Arnie retired from editorial and commercial work and put thier efforts into the workshops that Margo started back in the earlyh\ 80s, ones that Arnie and she brought to their current level, and that Margo continues to run. Her passion for photography is infectious, and she loves sharing a lifetime of professional experiences with her participants.
