Washington State 3-day Photography Workshop

  • How to take more beautiful, more interesting, more creative, and more original photographs than ever before
  • The best of a photography tour, and the best of a photography class

Workshops are held year-round, depending on availability and weather conditions.  They must be booked 45+ days in advance, and are eligible for a 15% discount if booked 75+ days in advance.  Workshops start Monday at 7:00 PM at the Meet-Up location, and end on Thursday at around 10:00 PM.  Check-out is usually between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM Friday morning.

If you would like to learn how to take photographs of the beautiful and lush Northwest Washington State, local villages, amazing beaches and waterfalls, colorful small marinas, and local wildlife, with all the perfect elements which people will really enjoy viewing – or learn to take them even better than before – then this is the workshop for you. This workshop includes an introductory course in Lightroom® and two photo critique sessions.  Each early morning we will be out catching breathtaking photos when the light is perfect, each midday we will be either critiquing our photographs or learning through the introductory Lightroom® course, and each sunset time we will be out capturing more photographs.  We will be looking at strategies and tips to exceptional photographs which makes them print-frame-and-hang worthy, and we teach all this while you are actually in the very environment where all this beauty is during this workshop!  We will be looking at several key photography opportunities and you will be creating spectacular photographs of unbelievable scenery – with your camera. This workshop is a unique approach to taking photographs which enhances the artistic nature of your images, and causes them to be significantly more interesting.  Take your photography from snapshot to art!

Journey In Common Photography Workshops make each workshop fit the clients who signed up so it is perfect for them.  You will end this workshop a better photographer than when you started!  We work one-on-one with each person to help them advance, and shoot amazing photos to take home.

What should I expect?

The Northwest Washington State Photography Workshop has a wide selection of absolutely breathtaking photograph opportunities. It is one of the most ‘target rich’ environments we have ever seen.  It has an active rain forest which is unbelievable; profoundly picturesque beaches, stunning forests, and lots of waterfalls that will take your breath away! You will cherish the photos you take, and want to print-frame-and-hang them!  They also make really great gifts for the art and photography enthusiasts you know.  It is an intensive emersion into a beautiful environment where you can truly focus on your photography craft with the benefit of expert professional assistance and education, and includes many many really amazing photo opportunities. The walking and hiking is moderate.

At our base hotel in Forks, Washington, we will meet for an important Orientation at 7:00 PM Monday evening before our first full Workshop day, and we provide all transportation for the activities during this workshop.  The Northwest Washington State Journey In Common Photography Workshop provides your lodging, one lunch, and one dinner.  We will provide you each day with bottled water and light snacks, as needed.  In addition to the ‘on-site’ photography and assistance from your coach/guide, there will be a Lightroom®introductory class right after the lunch we provide, photo critique sessions during the other lunches, and very helpful conversation during each meal.

Once you complete your booking process for your workshop, you will have access to our Northwest Washington State Photography Workshop Information E-Booklet which outlines what specifics you need to know about your particular workshop, more of what to expect, specifics on meeting locations, and what you need to bring.

Your Northwest Washington State Photography Workshop Information E-Booklet will also introduce you to your Coach/Guide. It also contains a lot of images from the workshop which can inspire you and give you creative photo ideas.  Once on-site, we will assist each participant in seeing photo opportunities, composition, and in setting your camera controls in such a way as to best capture quality photographs. Our efforts are to assist you to become comfortable enough in finding these photo opportunities and shooting them that you will ultimately feel more confident wherever you may be.

Included

Included in this workshop are four (4) nights lodging (double-occupancy), all ground transportation during the workshop, one lunch and one dinner, an introductory class in Lightroom® during the lunch we provide, and access to a professional photographer as your coach/guide.

Transportation to the Meet-Up location and meals other than the one lunch and one dinner provided are not included and are the participants’ responsibility.  We allow NO MORE than four (4) total participants unless you book a CUSTOM TOUR.

Dates & Costs

Workshops are held year-round, depending on availability and weather conditions.  They must be booked 45+ days in advance, and are eligible for a 15% discount if booked 75+ days in advance.  Workshops start Monday at 7:00 PM at the Meet-Up location, and end on Thursday at around 10:00 PM.  Check-out is usually between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM Friday morning.

The quoted rate is assuming a maximum of four participants, with double-occupancy lodging.  The rate covers all four (or less) participants and is NOT a ‘per-participant’ rate.  The following would impact your final rate:

  • If there are 1-2 people (double occupancy) in your party only, we will deduct the cost of one room, and the appropriate number of lunches and dinners.
  • If you choose to make extra spaces in your workshop available to others, and others book, the rate will be divided based on the number of people in each party.
  • If you book 75+ days in advance, you will receive a 15% discount which will be reflected in the final amount due (32+ days before the workshop first meets).
  • If you want single (private) occupancy, there will be an extra charge.
  • If coordination is possible, transportation from SeaTac International Airport and back is available for an extra charge.

A deposit of 50% of the non-discounted ‘rack’ price is due 45+ days before the workshop at the time of booking.  All adjustments to the workshop cost and to the remainder due will be finalized between 45 and 35 days before the workshop and published by email to those parties involved.  This final amount due will reflect all upcharges, division of fees, and discounts.  A completed booking includes agreement on which week the workshop will be held, a waiver electronically signed and submitted, an electronic questionnaire completed and submitted, and all monies due being paid in full.  This must be done 32+ days before the workshop begins (Monday at 7:00 PM).

Core Of Our Business:

First, we believe we can not serve 10-20 people with the level of attention necessary to be true to our mission – that you are a better photographer after the workshop than you were before, and that you take home great photos.  We therefore limit our workshops to four (4) clients.

We try to know enough about you even before the workshop starts so we are prepared to help in a way which fits you personally.  We work to impart info, tips, and tricks which will help you become significantly better in photography – in a way which will keep things fun, and still stick with you months down the road.  And we want you to be overwhelmed by the photographs you take.

History / David Westfall – Founder

After 35 years as a photographer in the portraiture, fashion, editorial, news, and 15 years with the Los Angeles Times (my “film” years), I ventured to Sedona with some friends to take photographs just for the FUN of it. I enjoyed this so much, that in 2012 I transitioned my career so I could share the FUN with others. I also wanted to offer something different than my experiences had been on typical photography tours, where the host takes you to a place where a good picture could be taken, points a finger at where the shot is, and then back into a van to go to the next stop — the pics didn’t improve, and no one seemed to learn much. As stated above in the Core of Our Business, our workshops are intentionally designed to limit the size to groups of 4 people or less, ensuring we are able to provide all information and guidance possible to each person participating. We look at their individual pictures and find ways to make them better. Our goal is to help each person become a better “photographer” than they were before they started the workshop — regardless of the location. Though I must say, we do go to some pretty spectacular locations.

Equipment Recommended:

Required: A DSLR camera a selection of no more than three (3) lenses, and very strong tripod. We have DSLR cameras available to rent, if you do not own one, and these rentals include EVERYTHING (including a new 16gb SD Memory Card which you take home) you will need as far as equipment for this workshop.

Highly Recommended: We would recommend one of your lenses is a good zoom lens, and that your tripod is very sturdy.  You will NOT need a flash, but you REALLY should bring extra camera batteries and whatever kind of memory cards your camera takes.  Some of the photography this workshop engages in CANNOT BE DONE without a remote for firing your camera’s shutter.  If you need help with Amazon links for any of this equipment, please email us at your earliest convenience.

Best: For the best pictures possible, the full list of recommended things to bring will be on your Northern California Coastline Photography Workshop Information Booklet which we will send you soon after you complete the booking process for your trip.

If you ever take your DSLR camera out of your home or studio: A good UV filter for the front of EVERY lens you own and use:  In addition to what UV filters do for you when you are outside in the form of protecting your photographs from light which can fog or spot your images, they are exceptional insurance against serious damage to your (and especially your expensive) lenses!  NO ONE should EVER leave the house with ANY camera lens that is not covered with a UV filter.  It is almost always the front of a lens which takes the hit in the field (hit against trees, rocks, tables, buildings, you name it); so it is always better if a $10.00 filter takes the damage over a $200-1,500 lens!
