This photo workshop celebrates Autumn in West Virginia with visits to Blackwater Falls, Canaan Valley, and Dolly Sods.  The program is designed for those with a basic knowledge of the operation of 35 mm SLR digital or mirrorless cameras with an interest in nature photography. Workshop emphasis is on improving photographic skills, creativity, and optimizing the use of your camera. The workshop includes an orientation PowerPoint program followed by photography in the field and image review sessions. Beginning and advanced photographers are welcome.  (Price $905 based on 2 clients in a room.  Single supplement $165)

Although I have conducted many photo workshops in West Virginia, I will arrive in area several days prior to the program to scout locations and check current conditions.  The exact itinerary for the workshop will be based on results from my time scouting, weather, safety issues, park regulations, desires of the group, and on my past experience.  As always, I will not photograph during the workshop so I can concentrate on clients.

Equipment Recommended:

  • SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT-  Camera bodies (D-SLR or Mirrorless) one or two AND their MANUALS.
    -  Lenses including wide, telephoto and possibly a macro lens or close-up accessories.  A tele-converter matched to your lens/camera system can be helpful to extend the reach from your prime lens.
    -  A sturdy but light weight tripod capable of securely supporting your longest lens. It is best if it reaches eye level without extension of a center column if it has one.  To support the camera on top of the tripod, a gimbal or sturdy ball head that moves smoothly and can support your longest lens.- Freshly charged batteries, spare batteries, and chargers.
    - Polarizing filter and neutral density filter (the latter filter is optional. It reduces the amount of light coming through the lens and reaching the sensor. Often used to create special effects with slow shutter speeds.)
    -  Memory cards and reader.
    - Rain gear for you and your equipment.
    - Cleaning items.  Micro fiber cloth to clean the lens.
    - Camera bag or backpack with room for your snacks & water (possibly extra clothing or rain gear).
    - Cell phone
    - Hoodman loupe (optional - helpful for viewing detail on the LCD screen of D-SLRs in daylight).- Bean bag or another stabilizing device for photographing from the car window sill.
    - Laptop or Tablet (The tablet should be capable of editing images and uploading select images via thumb drive or "AirDrop" to an Apple computer.)
    - A flash or thumb drive for quick transfer of images to my computer for our image review session.
    - Binoculars for spotting distant wildlife. -Rain gear for self & camera equipment
